With a fair wind we could’ve really been well up in front.
It's lived rent-free in my head for 30 years!! Has irked me all along.

And let's face it, we had 5 England internationals and had just finished 3rd. It would not have been that outrageous had we carried on like in 1990-91.

This 100% should have been our year

Simple as that !!??

I suspect he was keen on a move to the Gunners for some time, especially as his best mate in Football, David Rocastle, played for them.

I don't blame him in wanting to join the then Champions, at all but I certainly don't think he was blissfully unaware of Arsenal's interest, in him.
I've heard it (and I think it was from him, possibly Noades in an interview) that Wright stood in Ron's kitchen pretty much begging to go.

Granted, he owed us nothing at that stage given his contribution and £2.5M was about he right money for that point in time (although in hindsight if we knew he was going to score nearly 180 goals for them, then Arsenal would have paid double that!)

I think that version may have been in his second autobiography. In his first one ‘Mr Wright’, he said he’d heard that Arsenal wanted him that summer and he begged Ron Noades to let him go. He actually says in the book that he even considered going on strike if he wasn’t allowed to. Think once the season kicked in he may have thought it wasn’t going to happen, so the actual timing of the approach may certainly have surprised him.

David Dein/George Graham's take on the events 51.30 in. Dein even says he reached a gentleman's agreement with Uncle Ron over a call.

As Sir Steve said shortly after the move, Wright had probably outgrown us and wanted a bigger stage.
Not sure if anyone remembers the video magazine the club launched in 91/92 "Pictures from Palace" but from memory they conveniently skimmed over the move.

At that stage he’d performed miracles and taken a side destined for the drop to the third tier, to the third best team in the land. There seemed to be no glitch in his methods. But as the great man said himself, we didn’t realise it at the time - we thought we’d just go again, when in actual fact we’d hit the glass ceiling already.

I remember Howard Wilkinson interviewed on Football Focus on the first day of the league season, complaining about our game having to be postponed. The interviewer said something like, ‘Do you think Palace should be punished?’ and Wilkinson spat out, ‘Well something needs to be done!’ Always remembered that as was watching with friends and we found his annoyance OTT and amusing, and that phrase then became part of our repertoire of impressions we’d throw out on a night out.

I watched Do You Want to Win? last night on Amazon, about Leeds' rise to winning the title. It was a very good watch, and Wilkinson, to my amazement, came across as a very dry, witty guy. Incredible achievement.

Recommended if you've not seen it.

I will leave it to better qualified people than I to unpack what Ron really said and how it was reported, but that issue was definitely the first stepping stone to our decline.

As for the Everton game itself, I remember going up on the football special to Lime Street where a slightly more friendly set of police (still with big sticks though) met us and escorted us to some busses that took us to the ground. It was my first trip to Merseyside and I did get greeted by a Blue on the ground concourse asking "can I look after your car mate ?"

As for the game, I remember it being an enthralling topsy turvy game and us Palace fans creating a din in the upper wooden seated Bullens Road stand.

I had forgotten about Warzycha and Jailbird Ward playing for them, but remember Beardsley looking imperious (football wise of course). Still, we more than deserved our draw.

Good memories of the day.....and also the night but I will keep that to myself!

I remember Pictures from the Palace. Supposedly a 5-part series of videos that ended after the 2nd edition.

Weirdest editing ever of our first ever win at Anfield on the 2nd video. Loads of time spent on the 1st half where we went 1-0 down and then the 2nd half, with the brilliant turnaround, it was pretty much just the goals. Must be the only Palace win where you don't want to watch the highlights more than once!

Saturday 14th September 1991

Crystal Palace 1 Arsenal 4

And here begins the decline. If you want to know the precise date, Crystal Palace stopped being even remotely considered as title contenders ever again, this is the date you point to.

This season, more than any other, was one where I could tell the result just based on the travel to the match. Chatham to Norwood Junction should have been a simple two train journey but so often it was delayed and elongated by replacement bus services and pretty much every time that happened, it was guaranteed to be a shit day.

This was a shit day from the start. Bus service from Chatham to Strood - ages for the train to come and then take us to London.

Got collared by an older Palace fan who didn't remember that he'd bored me to tears on the Whitehorse two years before during the dire Coventry 0-1 of August 89. Of all the people to attach themselves to me! I wanted to be left alone - Friday 13th had been a horror night for me with the sight of Carey McEvoy copping off with another lad when that was the night I was planning to make a move!

Don't want to speak too ill of this Palace fan as I saw his death get announced in the programme a year or two later, but I really didn't need him or anyone else in my ear on the journey that day.

As for the game, by the time Bright scored late on, we'd already let in 4 for the third time in 20 months against Arsenal (it'd become 4 time in 27 months by the end of the season) and I was just distraught.

The good weather was the only redeeming feature of what was a heartbreaking weekend all round.

Wonder if Novello had on the back of the shirt: ‘Some of his best players are black’.

I think I may have it on video at the bottom of a cupboard. Can’t be sure though. Will check when I get a chance and if I do I’ll stick it on You Tube.

It was partly because of how good Smith and Campbell looked as a partnership in that game that I was surprised that Arsenal bought Wright, because I wasn't sure he'd get in their side.

The usual impossible game against Arsenal, but this time with all the other stuff happening off the pitch, it felt particularly demoralising. This was Arsenal’s first away win and only their third win out of eight, and yet it didn’t seem to matter; it was same old, same old. Totally overpowered, we just couldn’t cope with them.

Wright was very quiet and looking back you wonder how much he knew about his impending move? I felt on the day that he was frustrated, realising (a bit like Wilf today) that he really should be playing for a team like Arsenal.

The media were having a field day and supposed quotes like the one attributed to Campbell towards Noades, just stirred the pot. Depressing time which was about to get a lot worse.

Thanks for taking the time to upload. Watching as we speak. Back to the race row wasn't Andy Gray the only player to publicly speak up for Ron in the press?

To man Bubbs - thanks for uploading this. Watched it at the time but never since.

I do remember cringing a bit at what Ron said but I also remember thinking that Ron spoke like he was saying it exactly as he saw it and wasn't trying to cause upset as such.

I'll be interested to see what I make of it watching it again, 30 years more mature and wiser and with society as a whole more switched on to what's right and wrong when it comes to issues of race.

There’s a series on black cricketers by Mark Butcher on Sky where it revisits a Wisden article from 1995, saying black players are inherently lazy, which could have been written by Noades. Ignorance at best.
