Sheff Utd was a great day out. Left Sunderland at 6am to get the 6:45am train out of Sunderland, with the first beer of the day cracked open at 7am.

Meeting up with Spud and the boys at Victoria station at 10:30.

Lots havs been said about the atmosphere, and the great result.

I got the 7pm train back to Newcastle, and ended the day celebrating in the Palace night club til 2am, where it was student night and drinks were a £1 a bottle.

Had a nice hangover on the Tuesday morning, and remeber having to leave a 10am lecture to throw up.

Perfectly-named place to celebrate that win

Having seen Coppell's team emerge from the Mullery nightmare, and with all the hard work, focus and togetherness that enabled the club to finish 3rd and reach the FA Cup Final, post 1991 was to me just a series of false dawns and massive disappointments ending in Administration. I had therefore long placed Palace in the 90’s in a hard to reach part of my memory.

I was not sure I ever wanted to reopen that period but having loved One More Point at the time, I was given the book as a birthday present and read all of it during a recent Covid dodging trip to Germany and back. There is so much that I was able to recall; it was a good trip down memory lane and with time being a healer, not all bad.

I can fully echo Grim Reaper’s feelings about Leicester City. I went to Leicester away in 1994. I think we won by a rare Andy Preece goal and I took my wife along having booked a weekend away. Leicester had expected to win but were shit. At the end of the game Mrs SP had a call of nature which meant by the time we left the ground, we were exiting Filbert Street at the same time as some of their more intellectually challenged supporters. Having spotted us leaving the away end, they decided it was fair game to gob at her, leaving spit all down the back of her coat and running off like true heroes. For some reason my coat was phlegm free. From that day I carry a personal hatred of Leicester which understandably is not shared by many Palace fans. I got no pleasure from their Premiership win even if it was “good for football” and the 1996 Wembley experience was so bad for so many reasons.

Many thanks for writing the book Grim and I look forward to the next one….

Thanks for the kind words Strictly.

For reasons you'll have read in the book re the 1993 game, Leicester aren't high on my liked teams and I felt very similar to you when they won the title in 2016. Unbelievable story but I didn't exactly enjoy it.

Sorry to read about what happened to you and your wife after that 1994 game. Was a horrible walk back to the car although I did at least get away unscathed on that occasion.

The 1996 Wembley experience was at least healed by what happened the following year.

I’m pretty sure that at one Leicester away game not sure if Walkers or Filbert there was coin throwing from a section of the home crowd.

Certainly was at the 1994 1-0 win

Might also have happened when we went there and won 3-2 in 95 as well

Coins were thrown shortly after Williams had levelled matters in the 1-1 draw in the midweek draw in late 93' and I vaguely remember a Palace fan (with his daughter) being hit and taken across for treatment.

We should also remember that when Bright was about to sign for Palace, Leicester fans were keen to send him on his way with some cheery racist abuse at a reserve team game

That was a really enjoyable read, look forward to the next instalment.

Re: Leicester, I remember a game there in the 90s where they made an announcement at half time for supporters in their kop end to stop throwing coins at Palace in the terrace next to them as some Southampton supporters had been put in hospital the week before. The whole ground booed whilst that pocket of the terrace started singing Leicester songs in response

Is That The Programme - 2nd Leg, will be out next year.

I really don't know any more than this - but I'm 40000 words in now and just plugging away as and when. I won't take as long as I did on the first one!!

When Palace were on a winning run, it was a dry day and I was frantically selling 10 issues a minute in that period leading up to kick off, there was npo place I'd rather be. Happy times

There was a period in the 90s where Leicester had some hoolie issues, mostly with Chelsea..and that seemed to include us as well. Some of their fans were right wankers post their play off victory.

There were stories of meet ups or ambushes at train stations.

I think it was one of the last games at Filbert Street midweek. We parked outside some working mans club near away end. Got in there about 5.30pm. Other than another lone Palace fan who seemed to know the locals (saw him dong the same at the Elephant and Castle at Wolves)...we were the only Palace. We were booted and suited in City finery ordering our pints and cobs. Lol

They certainly did. A van lpad of them went to Ipswich dressed as Hare Krishnas. Caused a chaotic scene when they leapt out at Portman Road and attacked the locals. Read of it at the time in a fanzine and it sounded crazy. Finally saw some photos of that on Twitter a couple of months ago. Not as crazy as the famous Birmingham fancy dress riot of '89 but pretty crazy all the same

Thanks Oli

Just forcing myself through the chapters covering 1998 at the moment. Hard period to write about whilst ensuring readers don't slit their wrists such was the craziness we endured that year!!!
