Aja

Having got my Dad's 1979 Pioneer PL L1000 repaired recently, my mint condition of Aja by the one and only Steely Dan has arrived and as I type this post I'm listening to Mr Fagen sing the Deacon Blues.

I am a mere ameteur, but I have always felt this album is something special. Since listening to it on CD in the old Ford Galaxy back when I was very small on the drive down the M4 to West Wales from London with my Dad, it has regularly been a part of good times and memories in my life.

Sadly the old man has past along with Mr Becker, but the music lives on, seemingly timeless and unmistakeable.

Is there anyone out there for whom this record brings back special memories? Who thinks the album is more than just a collection of songs? I'd love to know!

Brilliant album and band full stop. Pretzel Logic probably my favourite although Aja is close.

Trying to get my 21 year old son into them as he is getting worryingly into Djent - I'm making slow progress but their sheer musicianship is slowly winning him over.

I am very fond of this record, especially Deacon Blues which is probably my favourite Dan tune. Rick Fenn, who has been in 10cc since Godley and Creme left, loved it so much he named his daughter after it.

I bought the CD for a couple of quid the other day, mainly because I keep hearing "Black Cow" (aka the foundation of Lord Tariq and Peter Gunz' "Deja Vu (Uptown Baby)" for us youngsters) on the radio. It is very good indeed.

edit - I had never heard of this "djent" that Another Oxted Eagle refers to, but it sounds frightful. I am aware of the Swedish band Meshuggah though who are apparently something to do with this and they are not my cup of tea.

As an aside, Steely Dan is surely one of the best band names ever.

If you have a filthy and perverted mind, perhaps.

No doubt you are also a fan of the likes of 10cc, Pearl Jam and The Lovin' Spoonful?

As a further aside, that's a nice vintage turntable. Well done for getting it fixed. I need new turntable as mine is rubbish, and am considering a Pro-Ject.

It’s nice to have music discussed here, rather than confined to its own sad forum.

The guitar intro to “Josie” is a classic (Larry Carlton, I think).

One of those albums you never get tired of. Since it's release until now I still play it. And to be very honest, there are not so many albums in my collection that I can say the same of, not with the same gobacktoability anyway.

Why is it "sad"?

I remember the moment I first heard the album.

Sitting in a mates house on the Walworth Road. He was just making a name for himself as a session musician and had invested in a wall of speakers, a **** off amp and turntable. A couple of tokes and I just sunk into the sofa. Don't think I've ever heard such a well produced, beautiful album. Every track is memorable.

I still go back to it regularly.

Been getting big into Steely Dan these past couple of years. Aja, Gaucho and Canít Buy A Thrill are bloody great albums.

MF DOOMs use of Black Cow is my favourite. More of a subtle sample.
