On this day: 24th January 1976
We beat the then Mighty Leeds United (European cup finalist the previous season) at Elland Road 1-0 in the FA cup 4th round with Dave Swindlehurst scoring.
This was for me one of the greatest performances I have ever witnessed from a Palace team. The scoreline is not a true reflection of the game, we actually murdered them. Peter Taylor and co were world class on this day. It was the day Big Mal introduced wingbacks to football; A Masterclass from a great Tactician.

Yes, one of the best days of my life - and of course it turned out to be only the start!!

One of my favourite ever Palace supporting days. As said above we were by far the better team despite us being from the old third division and Leeds being one of the best teams in Europe. Brilliant support as well, we took four special trains up there.

Yep, walking back to the mass of coaches I found the Leeds fans jolly pleasant.

Scary as hell. Had my treasured scarf nicked but otherwise got through unscathed. Fantastic performance by the boys that day.

"It had to happen sooner or later" the commentator memorably said when Swindlehurst headed the goal in.

[QUOTE=Hedgehog;17221346]Totally agree Colin, and back in the days when top teams didn't put out weakened teams for early round cup games.

And, Oh for someone in the team today who can head a ball like Swindles could...
I guess Benteke was, but we never seemed to get crosses to his head. That or he was just always in the wrong place. |

I was nine years old, and a Leeds supporter. My family all found it highly amusing that third division Palace went up there and beat them 1-0. My uncle had already started the process of taking me to Palace games and converting me - just over a year later, in the summer of 1977, the switch was complete.

A glorious day indeed. And completely deserved. ITV Big Match cleared the decks next day for a tribute to the magnificent performance.
As others have said, the journey back to the station on the buses was interesting. Massing in the car park was lively, what with the throat-slittting gestures, and those who thought they had made it to the sanctuary of the buses were sadly mistaken as Leeds fans had also walked on unchecked and halfway back launched their attack, with police conspicuous by their absence. Maybe we shouldn't have wound them up at the station going with the ongoing chorus of "We all hate Leeds and Leeds and Leeds" (to the Dambusters). One Old Bill with a couple of pips on his shouder got on and told to us "Shuuut ooop, unless we wanted to be on t'next traaain 'ome". Cue silence, until he was about 10 yards away, when it restarted at twice the volume. Childish, but fun. And nothing compared to what was about to come. Great times to be a Palace supporter. |

Roughly how many Palace went to this game?

At least 3K, might have been more, we had all of the bottom row behind the goal. 4 train loads at least. It was quite rough outside the ground, Cardiff was worse by a long way though, it was a damn long walk from Ninian to Cardiff Station. Leeds supporters got on our coach back to the station and they got clobbered by our group of 6 or 7.
