no import custom checks on goods arriving at Dover until July, Government didn't want the PR disaster of delays
we should expect the 'checks' that come in then to be no more than cursory to prevent lorries backed up - it won't be "taking back control" of our borders

Foreign media rightly report the recent NI rioting as ultimately down to Brexit. That's not how it is been reported in England on our pro-government BBC. There was and will never be any fudge possible on Northern Ireland for Brexit; Brexit meant angering either the republicans or the loyalists. A united Ireland will be coming in the next couple of decades because of Brexit. Some Brexiters should remind themselves that they once sang "No surrender to the IRA".

The riots in NI are 10% arseholes who want the troubles back and hide behind a cause and 90% chavs who know the police will stand off defensively and they can throw petrol bombs and steal shit. Most of the youths just use it as an excuse to.be a ****. Nothing more

I think that's partly true, but more significant to those pushing the rioting is likely the recent crackdown by PSNI on loyalist organised crime which is largely based around the old paramilitaries. The truth really is that the old school paramilitaries see Brexit as a cause to bolster their credibility and support than actually give a shi t about politics, esp with Stormount paralysed.

It's a dangerous game, for NI, because it's giving the paramilitary row holds among a youth that grew up with, and have enjoyed the benefits of peace. But with politics effectively on hold, they can see a chance to make themselves relevant (or more relevant again).

The danger is that it spills over into cross sectarian violence.

We are "taking back control" of out borders. Loads of EU nationals being refused entry due to lack of a working visa. Plenty of vacancies now for GBR workers picking fruit, veg and flowers. Food processing will also be recruiting as will recycling places. The youngsters can be Au Pairs and if you have a distant cousin doing up a house he'll even let you live on site while the jobs going on.

Whilst the Tories loved using the slogan 'taking back control' the Brexiteer Tory MPs on the various Select Committees were fairly ambivalent on this. Their logic was that as goods were coming from the EU there was no real need for customs to check them particularly if there was the possibility of delays at the border.

that's probably (though not definitely) right. Awful though it is, there is a lot still bubbling under the surface that takes anything minor (let alone Brexit) to kick it off. My daughter was at Glasgow uni and one weekend five years ago we were up there staying at a Airbnb at the same time an orange order march was taking place. Also had the dubious pleasure of going into a pub near Govan. Both scary/worrying

It was always a tentative peace on the edge and rioting has always been there. Itís just not usually reported in the rest of the uk. These riots are worse because validity, or at least what the nutters consider to be validity has been given to their cause.

We have messed around with the national identity of the loyalists. We have created a border in the Irish Sea and by doing so messed around with their perception of identity and who/what they are.

It was all very predictable and dogstar is quite right. The recent crackdowns by the PSNI have further angered the paramilitaries when they were already raging.

Of course, itís a tinderbox, has been since we invaded, colonised and then divided Ireland. The only way to deal with it is to treat it with infinite care. In the context of Brexit the only solution was Mayís solution.

In the context of N. Ireland there were several better solutions than Mayís. In the context of brexit means brexit bollocks Mayís solution was the last one remaining that could have worked.

Ok, true enough. I mean that once she had insisted on hard Brexit, her solution could have prevented this violence. Johnson’s really could not.

Yes it's almost as if they selected the worst possible deal. The sort of deal that only the Russians would be happy for the UK to sign

Very good post.

I have heard that there are adults on the streets next to these kids egging them on, and even stories of these kids being taken by car from other loyalist areas by these "adults" to continue with the trouble.
And of course the Unionist politicians are stirring it up.

All that's left of these groups on both sides are drug running criminals. The loyalists have never (to my mind) had any moral high ground whatsoever. They have always been violent thuggish racists.

I just hope the Republican side don't rise to the bait, but thats a very faint hope.
