Lions tour to SA 2021

So looks like the tour is on. I fear very few Lions fans will make it so even with reduced crowds they will be mostly South African which is harsh but just the way it is.

Anyone want to have a crack at picking the squad or even the starting 15? I just had a go on the BBC page To view the link you have to Register or Login and must apologise for still picking 6 english players despite the generally awful 6N. We did still beat the best team though and those players haven't all become crap overnight. Also 2 or my 6 are currently injured so didn't make the 6N and may not make the Lions:

1. Wyn Jones
2. LCD
3. Furlong
4. Jones (C)
5. Itoje
6. Underhill
7. Curry
8. Faletau
9. Sexton
10. Murray
11. VDM
12. Tuilagi
13. Henshaw
14. May
15. Hogg (VC)

Goes without saying that they all need to prove themselves in the provincial games but I think that is particularly true of Itoje who I've picked based on how good he can be and VDM who is a beast but needs to show what he can do against some really aggressive opposition. Tipuric very unlucky and bound to make the bench. Jonathan Davies and George North too. Marler and Simmonds both have a chance based on current form in the premiership too. I actually think the 9 and 10 is an easy choice. These guys have been there and done it and are back to playing very well. The choice of back up will be harder. I'm not sure if any of Youngs, Farrell or Ford even make the squad. There are arguments for the experience they bring but they just aren't playing well enough.

Actually Rees Summit could force his way in ahead of either May or VDM. If not, what a player to come off the bench. He could be this tours Jason Robinson.

Hogg, Watson, North, Henshaw, LRZ, Sexton, Murray, Wyn Jones, Owens, Furlong, Itoje, AWJ, Curry, Underhill, Faletau

Close calls at full back (williams), loose head (Vunipola, Sutherland), centres (Tuilagi/Farrell), 6 (Navidi), 7 (Tipuric, Watson), SH (Youngs, Williams, Price, Davies - no stand out really), Fly half (Biggar, Farrell - Russell is not reliable enough for me)

And Tadgh Beirne will be close to starting alongside AWJ. Itoje form concerning and a bit of a liability in terms or discipline

Some good shouts there. I agree Beirne hard to leave out. Will be really interesting to see how he does in the warm up games.

Wow, 2 Scottish coaches and no English for the Lions. Don't see many marginal calls going to England players then. I don't really mind as long as the best players for the job are picked.

Normally you'd be more up in arms - but nobody in the England set up has covered themselves in glory the last year, especially in the 6N. For me playing wise my starting XV if fit (big if in some cases) and available would be:

1) Wyn Jones
2) LCD
3) Furlong
4) Itoje
5) Beirne
6) Curry
7) Watson
8) Faletau
9) Murray
10) Russell
11) Van De Merwe
12) Henshaw
13) Tuilagi
14) Watson
15) Hogg

with a midweek squad of something like

1) Sutherland
2) Owens
3) Sinckler
4) AWJ
5) Henderson
6) Underhill
7) Tipuric
8) Simmonds
9) Williams
10) Sexton
11) Adams
12) Slade
13) Davies
14) Rees Zammit
15) Williams

Some tough calls with the likes of the Vunipolas, Farrell, Daly, May, Ryan, Richie, Stander, North, etc.....

I'm surprised we've agreed on so much given the tight calls all over the place. Watson or Underhill is a particularly tough one. Tuilagi is due back in a few weeks so let's hope he proves his fitness...

Tuilagi is a big risk. After North's form at 13 during the 6 Nations, surely it is 12 Henshaw 13 North at the moment. Finn Russell's form is iffy. Can't see him as Gatland's test 10. Farrell also poor form but better chance of being starting 10 for gatland, as he rates him. Ford is playing ok, sexton playing much better. Having said all that, the form 10 is probably Biggar.

The backrow is such a selection headache, in a good way. Although Faletau nailed on for 8. So much competition for 6 and 7. Danny Care an outside chance of touring and even starting. 9 not strong and he has been bang in form.

Yeah I've always liked Biggar and he is playing well. Jonathan Davies must have a shout in the centre's too. Care is an interesting shout. He's experienced and in form so why not? Apparently Borthwick and Rowntree both weren't available for Gatland so that helps explain the lack of English coaches.

I donít follow the rugby much these days, so havenít seen some of the younger players at all. For those who do, is the best XV likely to be a match for the Saffas?

Should be yes, lots of good players to choose from. All 4 home 6 nations aides fairly strong.

It really ought to be.

Doesn't sound like Tuilagi is going to make it either. He could be a late addition though if he proves himself at the end of the season and any of the other centres pick up an injury.

Ben Youngs has ruled himself out. Im not sure I'd have taken him anyway. Opens door wider for Danny Care?

widely reported now that AWJ will be captain. Quite right. He'll still have to play well enough in the warm up games to start but I'd expect him to. Simmonds expected to make it and surprisingly a reprieve for Daly following George North's injury.

I dunno. I’m not remotely certain he should be commanding a starting place based on current form. Very good against England and France, decidedly average against Scotland and Ireland.

I mean I know he will, as people think he has this Martin Johnson aura thing going on.

That said I am not sure there are two standout locks (Beirne, sure but not two) so maybe given that you start him because no one else had made a case.

But do you think it's right to make him captain and then see if he is up to it?
