Chinese tourists in the Arthur

I expect the club won't bother filling up the soap or hand sanitiser units as per usual tomorrow in our stand, despite it being full of tourists and dangerously overcrowded. Hygiene in the stand must be appalling.

Did you know that the Great Wall of China is so great, it can be seen from anywhere in the world.

It was Robert Ripley, the American illustrator who made a fortune with his cartoon feature Believe It Or Not!, who called the Great Wall “The mightiest work of man – the only one that would be visible to the human eye from the Moon”. This statement was, of course, founded on no evidence at all, since it was made 30 years before anyone had been in space. Yet it became sanctioned by use. Even the eminent Sinologist Joseph Needham, author of Science and Civilisation in China, stated that “the Wall has been considered the only work of man which could be picked out by Martian astronomers”. Though discredited by astronauts, the Moon version is still widely quoted as a “fact”. The truth was established once and for all during the first Chinese space flight in 2003, when astronaut Yang Liwei said he couldn’t see anything of it from orbit.

Not so clever.

Needham was a biologist who died in 1995. Science and Civilisation in China was started by Needham, but the project is still rolling on at Cambridge University. Wiki says 27 books - so far.
It shows in detail, how China was years/decades ahead of most other civilisations in most fields, before the industrial revolution.

Between 1644 and 1912, China was ruled by the Qing dynasty.
The Ming dynasty (the previous Chinese dynasty) general commanding the largest remaining army, had to make a decision between surrendering to the multiple rebellions and chaos, or to open the pass on the great wall, and allow the Manchu army (who were ethnically Jurchen people with their own language, writing and culture, but were very respectful of Chinese civilisation) to invade China.

He chose to open the pass, and the Manchus put down the rebellions, amidst much bloodshed, and peace was restored.
The first few Manchu emperors were capable and learned men, but as the years rolled on, the dynasty became increasingly corrupt and conservative.

Sun Yatsen's revolution in 1911/1912 (honoured by all shades of Chinese opinion), revealed a fatally weak China, exploited by the western European powers (especially the Brits), the USA, imperial Russia and Japan.
China had a lot of problems and a lot of ground to make up.

China has made huge progress since the power of the private sector was unleashed by Deng XiaoPing (about 65% of the Chinese economy is now non-state owned).

Anyone feeling threatened by this can relax, the Donald will soon issue an "executive order" commanding China to revert to feudalism.
