More worryingly, there have been reports recently that the anti vax movement (not the groups like those on NHS jabs but the ones in videos like this) over here is driving the creation of US style militia groups, with all the dressing in black, military training etc. Its also being created from a weird alliance of far left and far right.

Security services are seemingly quite concerned.

That’s brilliant…… It’s such a shame Jeremy Beadle is dead as I could half expect his little hand holding a microphone to appear from around the back of the copper, then his toothy grin to the camera as the copper looks to the sky with an embarrassing laugh whilst his mates roll up patting eachother on the back knowing they’ve finally ‘got’ good old Sarge!

Over 400 covid deaths today. It’s bizarre from the news you would think the pandemic is pretty much over. That’s the equivalent of 146,000 a year.

The weekend reporting lag is always given as an excuse on a Tuesday, however it does seem counter intuitive as we're easing restrictions..

You're right that death still high, but average over the last seven days annualises at around 96,000 and current estimate of hospital admissions where covid is secondary is 50% - so figure where covid is main cause is probably nearer 50k per year.

Again no proof of this. Are you talking of deaths from covid or with covid as they are 2 totally separate things.

We average circa 600,000 deaths annually. The stats seem to be pointing at covid replacing, flu and pneumonia deaths and while all death is of course awful pneumonia is often described as the dying manís friend. When a loved one is dying in pain from cancer or similar you hope they get pneumonia. Perhaps this is where covid will sit in the future.

I really do think it is excess deaths that need to concern us. Not replacing one type of death with another.

Of course there could be another variant that changes the outlook.

Thatís still an incredibly high number and many of the people where covid is secondary still might not have died without it.

yep, just below 10% of total of Uk deaths in a normal year. Issue is what we should do differently as it seems anything other than full lockdown has only a very limited if may impact. I see even Ireland opening everything up now, with most of Europe beginning to follow suit.

Personally, off the top of my head, even if it saves a minority of lives I would:

1) keep mask wearing on transport, supermarkets etc

2) introduce covid sick pay at full pay to stop people going to work with it.

3) have better ventilation systems put in workplaces and schools.

4) have covid passports.

Numbers are down in Spain, especially down south. I was out and about yesterday and everybody was masked up, everybody. Even walkers in the mountains.

Not sure many of these will have much if any impact on covid death rate. (1) not that onerous but the questions is when do you stop as what we have now with Omicron is talked about as being endemic (2) again, when do you treat covid as other illnesses? (3) is a very long term solution and (4) is mainly to persuade the unvaccinated to take the jab (which I agree would lower deaths of the currently unvaccinated as well as easing NHS pressure), with less transmission secondary.

Weird that masks seem to work in Spain but not in France

Numbers are up in France. Last week they recorded approx 2.1m new cases in 5 days. Yesterday they set a new European daily record of 501,635
